Kingston HyperX Predator DDR3 2400MHz 8GB Memory Review

Being honest, I was never a fan of the Kingston HyperX T1 series of memory, as it was tall and truthfully looked quite ghastly, but things have certainly changed with the Predator.

This new range of memory is shorter, when compared to the T1 and has a bit more style that could look good inside any system, with the contrasting blue and black colour scheme that we have going on. The fact that it’s shorter means that CPU coolers should be safer than it was when consumers used the T1 kits as it caused an array of problems with obstructions.

Performance wise, we were certainly impressed with the stock performance and thought that overclocking may cause some problems with a 2400MHz stock kit. We were right and wrong at the same time on this one as it didn’t clock that far as we expected but did open up a huge pathway for bandwidth across the read, write and copy functions which is what memory is all about in the first place.We did find that it’s not all about the sheer speed in terms of MHz as a slightly lower clock speed gave us better results overall, by quite a large margin and it would be interesting to see if the quad-channel kits are the same, as being an avid Intel X79 user myself, memory bandwidth is key to me in terms of photo editing and video rendering, and I can only assume that this performance trend transfers through the whole Predator line of memory modules.

Pricing and availability isn’t concrete or set in stone just yet, but this particular sku has been showing up in retailers around the £45 mark, which makes it comparable to other kits from various brands within the market and makes it good value overall. Kingston do make a 2666MHz kit, but from our first look, these seem to be priced at a much higher point in comparison.

The bottom line is that this kit is perfect for performance as we expected and warrants users wanting some of the best memory around. You can straight away tell that a lot of development on the design and performance has been put into this kit and with the great success of the T1 series under their belt, they hope to repeat the same with the Predator lineup and I say good luck to them, as they certainly impressed us here today.
