To coincide with the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, the UK is being treated to its first Klingon language courses, to be booked and conducted online. Already speak Klingon? Then rejoice: you can even become a tutor yourself.
“Klingon is a complicated language that takes time to learn,” writes Klingon language tutor Alex Greene. “The sounds you need to pronounce to speak the words are so completely different to English that many struggle with basic syllables at first. However once you get the hang of it it’s so enjoyable to speak and there are some great Trekkie communities to join where we solely converse in Klingon.”
Green is offering remote Skype lessons in Klingon, quoted at £100 an hour by The Express, though prices can vary, and have been made available through online marketplace Bidvine.com.
“There’s no doubt about it, Star Trek is a cult favourite with millions of fans around the world, so when we discovered that there was someone who was interested in teaching Klingon, we didn’t hesitate to sign them up as a service provider,” Sohrab Jahanbani, CEO of Bidvine.com, told The Express. “However I was surprised to find that no one else teaches Klingon in the UK, seeing as it’s one of the most famous extra-terrestrial languages ever created.”
“We are keen to sign up more people fluent in Klingon to help educate the masses in what is a truly fascinating language, but they have to really know their stuff and our Klingon expert will make sure of that,” he added. “£100 might seem like a lot, but as with any unique service/product the price is high because supply is low. I’m sure when more people come forward the rates will become more competitive.”
