Pricing and Final Thoughts

At the time of this review, I could not find the drive listed on Amazon yet. The US version has the 500GB listed for $124.99, but not the 2TB yet. On the UK version of Amazon, I could find some of the HDDs out of the same series, but not the SSDs yet.

Final Thoughts

There can be no doubt about it, the LaCie Mobile SSD is a beautiful drive. The design is simple, but adds something to the drive that simply makes it look far more premium. Premium is also something it is when it comes to the built-quality. The casing is made out of aluminium and the drive is drop resistant on a height of up to 3 metres.

There is no way to fault the Mobile SSD either when it comes to performance. The drive delivers a solid SATA-level performance. In fact, it is one of the best external SSDs we’ve tested. On top of that, you also get a nice 2TB capacity. And let’s face it, a 540MB/s rating is a pretty good speed for any external drive.

While the design is made to match with space grey MacBooks, the Mobile SSD will work well with almost any system out of the box. It is formatted as exFAT, which is why I say almost. Some OS’ might not carry a licence for the format by default. You can, however, easily reformat the drive to something else such as NTFS. With the included two cables, it’s also compatible with both older and newer devices. It should also be noted here, while we talk about exFAT and NTFS, that the fresh drive was benchmarked as exFAT while the conditioned is formatted as NTFS. It does make a difference in a couple of the tests, but not overall.

As a bonus, you also get a good warranty and an included rescue plan. Another bonus, at least for some people, is the 1-month trial for Adobe’s All Apps plan.

Should I Purchase One?

If you’re looking for a sturdy and fast portable drive and also want one that looks great, then this would be a great option. The only thing which speaks against it at this time is the availability. But that should change shortly and I expect the drive to be widely available very soon.
