AMD is often criticized for its drivers and the latest Radeon driver release has not helped that reputation with one users reporting the drivers dropped performance, renamed their GPU and disconnected their internal devices on their Ayaneo handheld.
These issues were shared by carygolomb on Twitter, via tomshardware, who reported problems with the latest drivers on their handheld device. Golomb claimed that the latest update had tanked their performance, renamed the 780M GPU in device manager to 760M and disconnected internal devices including the fingerprint reader, 360 controller and sound. Of course, this is just one person but Digital Foundry replied to the tweet stating that their Ayaneo 7840U had dropped from 33 FPS in Metro EE down to 22 FPS.
Both of these reports are regarding iGPU and as far as I can see, there haven’t been any reports about performance issues with dedicated GPUs which is some good news. The last AMD GPU i’ve ever used was the Radeon 9600 so I can’t comment on their drivers though I hear that nowadays they tend to be fine with the odd small issues here and there. With this news though, if you are using a Ryzen 7000 series mobile processor with an iGPU then it’s probably a good idea to avoid updating right now and maybe extend that to some older mobile processors as well.
So the driver in question was released 4 days ago and has brought in several fixes for the following issues.
