The Latest Battlefield Game is a Historical Treat

During the past few days, there has been a great deal of speculation regarding the upcoming Battlefield game which was fuelled by subtle hints from DICE on social media platforms. Finally, the official trailer has arrived and the latest entry in the series will take place during World War I. The adrenaline-fueled trailer includes tanks, horseback units, biplane air battles, trench warfare and looks absolutely stunning! Of course, DICE didn’t completely stick to the source material and decided to ramp things up to improve the gameplay. For example, an accurate portrayal of trench warfare would be fairly dull due to slow expansion and prolonged stalemate.
I’m so pleased with this direction and cannot wait to play Battlefield 1. In recent times, first-person-shooters have prioritised modern settings and moved away from the magical aura of classic weaponry. This is clearly emphasised by the staggering negative reaction to Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. In contrast to this, Battlefield 1’s official trailer has received an overwhelmingly positive reception and I’ve seen various people on my Twitter feed pre-order the game well in advance. As a history enthusiast, I adore whenever games revisit the past and it’s quite clear people have grown tired of the futuristic environment. I have to commend DICE for creating a World War I shooter because it’s a difficult task due to the nature of trench warfare. This is one of the best trailers I’ve seen in recent memory and after the disappointment of both Star Wars: Battlefront and Battlefield: Hardline, it looks like DICE could well be back to their best. However, I hope they have a smooth launch and learnt from the buggy mess that was Battlefield 4.
