Overwatch in Higher Resolution

Blizzard has officially rolled out the latest update for Overwatch adding and modifying gameplay features. The previous update included new content for their Blizzard World map launch. However the new update finally brings in 4K UHD support for the Xbox One X. It also introduces some balancing adjustments to two of the game’s most powerful characters: Mercy and Junkrat.

Unlike the first 4K UHD support for PlayStation 4 Pro which only had 4K HUDs on 1080p graphics, Xbox One X is a true 4K UHD experience. Surprisingly, the update for the Xbox One X is only 650MB, which consists of some higher-resolution texture upgrades The assets are the equivalent of running the game on the “Epic” preset on the PC in terms of quality. Just like the PC, a dynamic scaler is also utilized so this is not merely a console workaround.

It allows the game to produce consistent e-Sports worthy framerate and efficiently utilize the hardware. On the Xbox One X, the majority of the frames rendered on screen are going to be truly 3840 x 2160. According to Eurogamer, their tests show that even on hectic fights in the Numbani map, the lowest figure recorded is 2112 x 2160, which is still a considerable bump from 1920 x 1080.

What About PlayStation 4 Pro Users?

Unfortunately for PlayStation 4 Pro users, it seems that this upgrade is exclusively for Xbox One X players. PS4 Pro has enhanced texture filtering equivalent to the PC’s 8x anisotropic filtering setting. However, it cannot match Xbox One X’ and the PC’s full 16x mode.

What About Gameplay Nerfs and Buffs?

The latest patch also nerfs Mercy and Junkrat for PC and console users alike. Mercy’s Valkyrie ultimate has been reworked. It no longer makes resurrection instantaneous, and the second resurrection bonus is gone. The Guardian Angel speed boost while in Valkyrie mode also gets a 50% reduction. Plus, the entire duration of Valkyrie is now down to 15 seconds from 20 seconds.

Junkrat got away with only a minor nerf in this round. Specifically, the range of his concussion mines has been reduced. He can no longer kill a large area of players just by throwing mines blindly. It still remains quite powerful when it explodes. However, it will most likely result in only killing the closest enemy and push away everyone else.
