One of my all time favourite features in Sim City wasn’t building a beautiful city, making its inhabitants happy, or making sure that travel routes to the University building were nicely catered for. Sure, I did all those things, it was a great way of relaxing after a hard days work, but when it came down to it, firing up the disasters feature was a lot more fun. Now it looks like Cities Skylines is about to add in something similar of its own with the release of their Cities: Skylines Natural Disasters expansion.
The disasters can be turned on to occur randomly, giving you a new dynamic to enjoy. That’s if you take pleasure in having all your handy work smashed to bits by a meteor anyway. It’s not always about the destruction, though, as testing yourself to responding to an emergency and rebuilding can be a great gameplay dynamic. One of the coolest additions is the introduction of disaster response teams, as well as early warning systems, like deep space radar to help you prepare for meteor strikes. Of course, all the warning systems in your digital world won’t help your people if you decide to trigger the disaster manually just for kicks.
If you want to know more about the disasters feature, then check out the new Cities: Skylines – Natural Disasters Developer Diary video below, as they walk you through each of the new features and how they can be used.
“Natural Disasters features a catalog of catastrophes to challenge mayor-players everywhere, including planning with early warning systems and emergency routes, devastating and destructive disaster effects, and caring for the populace as they struggle to rebuild. The expansion will also update Cities: Skylines with a new scenario editor and gameplay mode, allowing players to finally win – or lose – the game on their own terms.”
Natural Disasters will include:
