League of Legends Source Code Stolen – But it’s Not As Bad As you Might Think!

In terms of gameplay, I can’t honestly tell you that much about League of Legends since I never really played it all that much. Well, I did enough to learn two things: Firstly, I’m not very good at it. And secondly, a lot of people on my team seemed to repeatedly want to remind me of this fact. – With that being said, however, what I do know is that when a game’s source code is stolen, it’s usually an incredibly serious thing.

As such, with Riot Games confirming on Twitter that the League of Legends source code was stolen in a hacking incident last week, this would usually set more than a few alarm bells ringing. – Fortunately though, in something that is undoubtedly a very rare instance, it doesn’t seem that Riot Games thinks the hackers have gotten hold of much useful here!

League of Legends Source Code Stolen – But Don’t Panic!

In terms of the data breach, Riot Games has confirmed that the source code was stolen for League of Legends, Teamfight Tactics, and an in-house developed anti-cheat software. – Now, starting with the latter, the good news is that this is not deployed in any way within their titles meaning that, while Riot Games are probably not happy someone might be poking around this, it should affect their titles in any way.

What about the source code though? Well, speaking specifically on League of Legends, Riot Games has also allayed fears by confirming that, even despite this possibly hitting the public sometime soon, it has very little practical application. At worst, it might get a deep dive to potentially uncover some previously unknown cheats, but that’s about it.

And account information, passwords, etc.? Not compromised so no need for users to worry there!

So, overall, this definitely seems to likely represent one of those rare instances where a successful hack on a major developer was made, but it’s probably not going to result in much bother for anyone!

What do you think though? – Let us know in the comments!
