Leaked slides reveals Intel’s next-gen ‘Valley View’ to sport Ivy Bridge graphics

According to leaked slides that made their way to the web, Intel is preparing a new 22nm ‘Valley View’ Atom chip that should feature Ivy Bridge-class on board graphics.

Codenamed ‘Valley View’, this CPU will be part of the Balboa Pier platform, set for launch early 2013, scheduled to be a follow-up to the Cedar Trail platform found in current netbooks.

According to the slides, a fan-less system with up to four cores is planned which should offer similar performance levels and capabilities as the current Cedar View cores. This new chip will also support up to 8GB of RAM, USB 3.0, and up to four times the graphical performance compared to current PowerVR-equipped Atoms. Display connectivity will be composed of DisplayPort outputs, two of them, as well as one HDMI.

Ivy Bridge alone is set to bring up to 40% graphics performance gain compared to Sandy Bridge, the same boost will be even more noticeable on the low power Atom chips. However, the netbook market is not as interesting as it was 2-3 years ago, the product attracting the most attention on the market currently are the tablets and so-called “Ultrabooks”, so it’s good news to see Intel bringing decent graphics to the small and affordable form factor. Aside for the netbooks applications, the new Atoms should also be great for media centres and light-duty desktop PCs.
