LEETGION Hellion Mechanical Gaming Mouse Review

Comfort

When we got our hands on the Hellion we were slightly unaccustomed to the fairly unusual shape, for example the forward/back navigation buttons are now in an awkward position, resulting in having to stretch your fingers apart to press them. The thumb button, or the “attack” button as it is called, is very well placed and the size of it makes it very easy to press. The size, coupled with the fact it uses Cherry MX Blue switches, makes it incredibly easy to press and very satisfying at that – so much so, we experimented with it by changing it to the left click, which was different, but actually very easy to get used to, until that is, we needed to think of something to go where the original LMB was.

The shape does mean some discomfort for any gamers who use the claw grip, as there is a gap around the bottom of the mouse that does get uncomfortable on the little finger after hours of use. Now it’s time to put the LEETGION Hellion through it’s paces during several gaming tests and general use. First up we’ll put it through the standard tests of different game genres to see if it performs better in a certain area.

First Person Shooters

For this particular category we fired up the popular Battlefield 3 as this particular games has many different controls for when on foot, in a tank or in a jet. First off the movement of the mouse was very slick, it cruised across our mouse pads with little resistance. The movement was precise and accurate allowing us to quickly align our target and then pummel them with bullets. The on-the-fly DPI changer allowed us to ramp up the sensitivity when we were in a tank, jet or heli, which vastly improved the response time and allowed us to get some more frags. We bound the attack button in this instance to “stab”, which made it much easier to grab those dog tags.

We found the performance to be just as exceptional in Counter Strike: Global Offensive also, with instant response times and accurate movement.

Real Time Strategy

We would have liked to test the Hellion in it’s natural environment by playing StarCraft 2, but since our copy has yet to arrive we had to make do with our usual Supreme Commander 2. For this genre we switched the sensitivity up so we could navigate the map quicker – for which the Hellion is ideal for. Sticking it at the max 5000 DPI meant it wasn’t ridiculously sensitive, but was fast and controlled enough to make a big difference. It allowed us to quickly select our forces and send them to attack the enemy much quicker than if we were using a slower optical mouse. The lack of additional buttons did mean we couldn’t have as many commands bound, but we used the macro record facility to bind a script to the attack button, which would instantly select the forces on screen then attack the location the cursor was at.

RPG

For the Role Playing Genre, we decided to play some Diablo 3, so after we jumped into a game we quickly assigned the side button to cast our most used spell, which was immensely useful. Again the mouse was ideal throughout the session, with the only noticeable flaw being the lack of buttons to assign the spells to, as we could only assign three in total if we made use of the forward/back buttons.

General Use

For general use we found the Hellion a breeze to use, just like we did during the gaming tests, with the main flaw being the discomfort that we mentioned in the first paragraph, although that’s just down to the way one grips the mouse. The positioning of the forward/back buttons were also a little awkward to use – it’s like LEETGION just wanted to focus on the looks, rather than the practicality.
