Warner Brothers Announces Lego Dimensions Development has Ceased

Lego Dimensions – A series that built on its success!

Lego has for generations been a favourite of children and adults alike. The brick building company has, however, seen a resurgence in popularity in the last 10 years. Many would say that this is due in part to the highly successful games they have released. Games such as Lego Star Wars or Harry Potter have proven to be amazing accessible and fun to play. Ideally for the game’s developer as well, the format, like the product is so transferable that they’re basically all the same game, they just look different. Despite that, Lego Marvels 2 is due for launch next month.

When Lego Dimensions launched 2 years ago, it did bring something new to the table. Building off a similar style of Amibo or Skylander figures, Lego Dimensions allowed you the opportunity not just to play the game, but to assemble an interactive model in the process.

Nothing as complicated as a 7,500 piece Millenium Falcon, but still pretty cool.

Sadly, however, after 2 years the party is over. Warner Brothers have announced via Polygon that further development for Lego Dimensions has ceased.

The end of a popular, but limited spin-off

The Lego Dimensions spin-off was certainly logical, however, a bit confusing. When it released 2 years ago the writing was on the wall for the attachable (or detachable) game mods. Skylander, while insanely popular for about 6 months, had crashed. The hype over Amibos had, while still strong, died down. It, therefore, was surprised that Lego decided to enter a market that clearly only had a limited lifespan.

While sales of Lego Dimensions were certainly not poor, they were priced at a point that makes them slightly too high to lure in the casuals. It ultimately ended up being a game that had a cool concept, but alas, never met its potential.

Professional Lego builders and master builders perhaps decided to look elsewhere.

Warner Brothers have said that they will continue to support the game, so it isn’t being abandoned. Fans of the series, however, can expect no further releases.
