Hewlett-Packard is not the only company with new workstations powered by Intel Xeon CPUs. Lenovo is also announcing their new ThinkStation P720 and P920 workstations featuring Intel Xeon Bronze, Gold, Silver and Platinum processor options.
The ThinkStation P720 features a dual processor socket C621 motherboard that has twelve DIMM slots for DDR4-2666 memory. It has 3x PCIe x16 slots, 1x PCIe x8 slot, 1x PCIe x4 slot, and a single legacy PCI slot for expansion. In terms of storage, it has four 3.5-inch drive bays, two 5.25-inch drive bays and two M.2 connectors, which are now directly mountable to the motherboard. Previous Lenovo workstations made use of adapters, so this frees up the room on-board.
Users can install up to two NVIDIA Quadro P6000 or GP100 GPUs, as well as up to two 28-core Xeon processors. Up to 384GB of memory can be onboard.
The ThinkStation P920 is a larger than the P720 chassis. Naturally, it also has more room for more components. While it also supports up to two Intel Xeon processors, it maxes out the RAM at 2TB and supports up to three NVIDIA Quadro cards. Since it supports more components, it also comes with a larger power supply at a 92% efficient 1400W unit. In comparison, the ThinkStation P720 is available with a 92% efficient 690W or 900W unit, depending on the configuration.
