After a launch last year, AMD’s RX 400 series of GPUs have been doing quite well. However, it is nearing time for the annual refresh that we all know is sure to come. Logically, the next progression would the RX 500 series. However, it is nearing time for the annual refresh that we all know is sure to come. Logically, the next progression would the RX 500 series. This has just been confirmed by Lenovo in their Y520 laptop reveal which outs the new unannounced RX 560M mobile graphics card.

According to Lenovo, the RX 560M features up to 4GB of VRAM which is on par with the RX 460M it is likely replacing. Given that it is mentioned alongside the GTX 1050 and GTX 1050Ti, I would expect its performance to fall around there as well, somewhat higher than the RX 460M. However, no additional details have been given other than that.

There are several possibilities as to the GPU powering the RX 560M. First, it could merely be a rebadged RX 460M, perhaps would a higher clock speed. While reasonable, AMD’s new naming structure suggests such a card would be called the RX 465M. Another scenario is that it is still using Polaris 11 but with a new more powerful core configuration, with more CUs enabled. Lastly, we could be seeing the new Polaris 12 GPU which may sit somewhere in between the RX 460 and RX 470 in terms of performance.

Whatever the case, it looks like AMD is moving past the RX 400 series and towards the new RX 500 lineup. Perhaps this means Vega is closer than expected with the new GPUs set to arrive under the new lineup. Hopefully, AMD will be revealing more details at their upcoming CES event.
