LG Electronics is currently working on developing an OLED-based rollable TV, which should be ready for an official release next year. Measuring in at 55-inches, the TV will probably be unveiled during the International Consumer Electronics Show in January 2016, but mass-producing it will definitely require more time. The news of a rollable TV should not come as a surprise, especially since LG has already manufactured a fully operational rollable display not too long ago. I don’t know if this new TV will be extremely impressive as far as visuals are concerned, but it will definitely be better than standard LCD TVs because OLED technology does not require a backlight.
Regarding the gadget’s launch and availability, an industry official has stated the following:
“Usually, it takes a year from the development of a new display to the release of a TV. As the rollable display is already available, there is the high possibility that LG Electronics will unveil the rollable TV at ICES, which has great ripple effects on the whole world.”
LG Electronics is not the only company that’s working on OLED-based TVs. Chinese manufacturers such as Skyworth, Panasonic, Hisense and Changhong are also developing their own similar products, not to mention Turkey’s largest home appliance manufacturer, Vestel.
