3 Weeks ago our eTeknix YouTube account was compromised by scammers and the account was replaced with Tesla, this was very irritating for us and we found many other’s who had fallen for the same scam and as of today, it turns out that not even the big dogs in the tech space are safe, as the Linus Tech Tip’s channel has been hit with the same scam.
This morning the LTT channel was taken over similarly to our own, renamed to Tesla and had a live fake video with Elon Musk with the title spouting some crypto coin rubbish. This scam, at least in our case, involved a fake PDF.SCR file which came from a seemingly legitimate source and simply appeared as a normal .PDF file. Once opened the file would give the attacker the ability to access your accounts by getting access to your browser session cookies. You can watch our full video on the topic below.
Seeing as this scam involved human error it’s not a case of having top security so it’s perfectly capable of happening to anyone no matter big or small. LMG hasn’t confirmed how this has happened as they are still investigating, but has released a statement saying that everything is being fixed by Google and hope to work with them to prevent this from happening in the future.
The takeaways from this are that nobody is immune to social engineering, stay vigilant when opening unknown files.
