LiteOn Unveils The CV5 Series Budget SSD

LiteOn might not be the first name which comes to mind when thinking of solid state drives but they’ve recently created a new line-up designed for budget systems. While the CV5 SSDs lack the read/write rates of more premium offerings, it’s still enough of a boost from mechanical drives to make Windows much more responsive. In terms of capacity options, the end-user can choose between 128GB, 256GB and 512GB models. Also, the drives employ a TLC NAND flash with limited SLC cache capabilities and offer read speeds up to 520MB/s. On another note, the 128GB variant allows for writes up to 160MB/s while the 256GB edition supports a maximum write read of 320MB/s. Finally, the 512GB model can reach speeds up to 450MB/s.
Clearly, this isn’t going to win any awards in the performance category and appears relatively slow compared to most modern SSDs. Saying that, the drives are only intended for basic computing use and their success will greatly depending on the entry price. If the price point remains low, I can see these storage devices being quite useful for low-end builds and users wanting to upgrade their hardware without spending too much money. As time progresses, performance SSDs and NVMe storage should become more accessible which brings down the price of budget storage even further.
