It Looks Like AMD’s FuryX Is Also Missing Some DirectX 12 Features

Plenty of people are talking about Nvidia’s Maxwell architecture and how it is not up to par with AMD’s Graphics Core Next as far as DirectX 12 rendering is concerned. Some recent reports stated Maxwell’s lack of Async Compute support is the main culprit, but it looks like things are not only looking bad for the green team right now because AMD’s FuryX graphics cards are also missing a few DirectX 12 features. The news comes from AMD’s Robert Hallock, who replied to a Reddit thread concerning Nvidia’s problems.

He stated that there is no such thing as “full support” for DirectX 12 right now, and this includes graphics cards from both manufacturers.

“I think gamers are learning an important lesson: there’s no such thing as “full support” for DX12 on the market today. There have been many attempts to distract people from this truth through campaigns that deliberately conflate feature levels, individual untiered features and the definition of “support.”

This has been confusing, and caused so much unnecessary heartache and rumor-mongering. Here is the unvarnished truth: Every graphics architecture has unique features, and no one architecture has them all. Some of those unique features are more powerful than others. Yes, we’re extremely pleased that people are finally beginning to see the game of chess we’ve been playing with the interrelationship of GCN, Mantle, DX12, Vulkan and LiquidVR.”

Apparently, the features that are missing on the FuryX are Raster Ordered Views and Conservative Raster, but Robert stated that the effects created with these particular features can already be reproduced using other techniques at acceptable framerates. While this is not particularly worrying news for AMD, us gamers will probably have to put up with DX12 games that run better on AMD’s cards and worse on Nvidia’s and vice versa, at least for now. However, things might change for the better as new architectures arrive from both companies.
