Lord of the Rings Online Expansion – You CAN Simply Walk into Mordor
Mike Sanders / 7 years ago
Lord of the Rings Online never quite replicated the success of World of Warcraft, but then, nothing did. After over 10 years of Lord of the Rings Online, however, the prize at the end, Mordor, has been inaccessible. So, to quote a very old meme, one does not simply walk into Mordor. That will not be the case for much longer as a new expansion is set to finally unlock this area.
Do people still play Lord of the Rings Online?
Since the transition to a free-to-play platform, the game does still have quite a strong following. There is, of course, a subscription based perk system, but that isn’t really necessary.
Many suspect that if the game had not transitioned to F2P back in 2010, the franchise would be dead by now. It was, to be fair, one of the first major MMORPG’s to do this and it seems to have been rewarded with a decent life span. The announcement of the new expansion via PcGamesN is therefore set to be welcome news to those who have always remained loyal to this franchise.
What is being released in the new Lord of the Rings Online expansion?
Quite a lot of new content, which as above, for a F2P game is pretty impressive. The new additions include 300 new quests, a new alliance system, High Elves as playable characters/class, a level boost and a whole bunch of titles (whatever they do).
I must confess, I’ve never played Lord of the Rings Online. In the times that MMORPG’s had my interest, it was entirely dominated by World of Warcraft. I did try others but always felt that they were just trying to copy what WoW did. World of Warcraft subscriptions has been tumbling in recent years. Current estimates suggest currently around a third of when the franchise was at its peak. This might reveal that people may see Lord of the Rings Online as a cheap alternative to get their fantasy fix.
