Who doesn’t remember the famous words: “If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 88 miles per hour… you’re gonna see some serious sh!t” – at least from my generation. And that’s what happened to Nigel Mills, aged 55, when he was out cruising in his cult vehicle. He didn’t time travel though, instead, he was caught speeding in Essex where the coppers clocked him at 88-89 MPH.
Mr. Mills claims he wasn’t trying to time travel nor break the space-time continuum, he simply took his cult mobile out for a spin as he does a few times a year.
“I wasn’t trying to time travel,” said Mills, despite his top speed being recorded as 89mph, heading north on the A12 near Margaretting. “It was at 11am on Sunday and the road was completely clear.”
Whether that’s true or not is really up to anyone’s guess, but I chose to believe him in this case – even if it didn’t result in a fine for him. While he was summoned and appeared before Chelmsford magistrates, the case was thrown out after the two officers who clocked him speeding were absent from the court date.
He explained that as a fan of the cult movies, he had purchased the vehicle for him and his family and only takes it out a few times a year. “People recognize it, they slow down and take pictures – drivers take pictures out of their windows or try to film you and I get approached at petrol stations.”
The story didn’t reveal whether the car was fully equipped with the flux capacitor which is needed for time travel, but it probably wasn’t. Either way, that’s a speeding ticket I would frame, even if it was 1 MPH too fast. Maybe next time Nigel, who knows.
