With the pervasiveness of mobile smartphone gaming, gaming addictions are being brought to the forefront. This is especially true of titles where there a large pay to win or even pay to play element, something that many mobile games rely on for monetization. While we often hear of users spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars, one man has reportedly spent about $1 million dollars on the mobile title Game of War.
45-year-old Californian Kevin Lee Co recently pled guilty to embezzling nearly $5 million dollars from his company. Of course, he blew money on a nice luxury sports car, plastic surgery, and other luxury items but the real shocker is the money spent on the game. That spending took up over 25% of the embezzled funds in total which is pretty crazy since it’s a transient digital expenditure.
Compared to other mobile titles, Game of War is one of the better-performing ones. Some reports have pegged their daily revenue at about $1 million dollars. On average, each player spends about $550, which once you consider how many freeloaders there are often are, means a lot of top players or whales like Kevin blowing loads of money. Given his inability to control his spending, it’s no surprise that Kevin got caught for his embezzlement.
While not many people have a cool million to spend on a game, I can’t ever imagine spending that much on a single game. Do you think you could spend that much on just a single game?
