U.S. based company, Marvel Technology have just invested in Memoright, a Taiwan based SSD manufacturer in an effort to combine its SSD controller with Memoright’s technology and expertise in firmware to provide overall a better SSD solutionfor both sides.
Marvel and LSI are 2 of the largest companies to make SSD controllers with a global share of at least 70%, followed by Phison, JMicron and Silicon Motion.
While LSI install their controller with its own firmware, Marvel on the other hands rely on their clients for firmware and since many SSD vendors don’t have the resources for making and developing their own firmware, LSI have a clear advantage. This move however, could help Marvell to be more on a level playing field with LSI in the future.
