It’s been a long time since I last played a Mechwarrior game. How long? Well, I know it was Mechwarrior 2 so around 1995-1996. Since then, sadly, the franchise has not quite had the love or attention it deserved. Some sub-par, underwhelming or completely awful sequels came, but to date, at least for me, the 2nd game has been the last one truly worth playing. Even if the polygon graphics haven’t exactly stood the test of time.
It is perhaps for that reason that it’s been over 15 years since the last Mechwarrior game came out!
Well, the good news is that a fresh game in the franchise is on the way. Better still, it’s actually looking pretty decent.
In a brand new trailer released, Mechwarrior 5 is, so far, looking very impressive indeed. For those unaware of the franchise, the premise is very simple. You build and customise a robot and then fight other robots. That does sound rather bland, but the level of design and customisation is what made the game so interesting.
Ahh, there we hit upon the fly in the ointment. The developer, Piranha Games, has said that a release date is roughly planned for September 2019, but are very keen to emphasise that this is just a pencil mark. This could be subject to change at any moment between now and then.
In terms of what we’ve seen so far though, I’m going to let myself get a little excited other this. It might not be perfect, but so far it seems to be ticking all the right boxes for me.
