MediaTek to Launch Arm-Based Processors for Windows

MediaTek is preparing to launch its first Arm-based processors for Windows PCs. According to Reuters, MediaTek will enter the market as Qualcomm’s exclusivity deal with Microsoft ends this year.

MediaTek’s Plans for Windows PCs

MediaTek’s new system-on-chip (SoC) will utilize Arm’s ready-made designs. This hints that MediaTek might use Arm’s compute sub-system (CSS) for client PCs. This CSS includes high-performance Cortex-X925 and Cortex-A725 cores, energy-efficient Cortex-A520 cores, and the Immortalis-G925 graphics processor.

However, it’s unclear which version of Arm’s IP MediaTek will use. Arm refreshes its designs annually, usually announcing them in May. Depending on MediaTek’s timeline, they could use either the current 2024 designs or next year’s 2025 designs.

MediaTek will face stiff competition from Qualcomm, Intel, and AMD. Qualcomm has been the exclusive supplier of Arm processors for Windows PCs since 2016. However, with the end of their exclusivity deal, other companies, including MediaTek, can now enter the market.

Qualcomm’s recent Snapdragon X-powered Windows PCs have shown impressive performance and battery life. MediaTek will need to offer competitive performance to make a mark in this space.

MediaTek’s Potential Advantage

MediaTek has a significant market share in smartphone SoCs, particularly in entry-level and mid-range devices. Their experience in this sector might give them an edge in developing cost-effective and efficient processors for Windows PCs.

Additionally, MediaTek has a history of collaboration with Nvidia. This partnership could play a crucial role in developing high-performance graphics for their new processors.

While MediaTek and Microsoft have not commented on these developments, the potential for MediaTek’s entry into the Windows-on-Arm market is significant. It could bring more competition and innovation, ultimately benefiting consumers.
