Meet the Ataribox Games Console by Atari

A New Console by Atari

Atari is a company with a rich heritage when it comes to Games Consoles. Of course, the first games console publicly available launched back in 1977. However, the Atari name has been far succeeded by the likes of Microsoft and Sony with XBOX and PlayStation and Nintendo. Even so, Atari has recently ruffled a few feathers with the announcement of their upcoming Ataribox.

What is an Ataribox

Traditionally, when a new console is announced the first we hear of is the specifications. The aesthetics then get revealed at a later date. However, Atari has gone about it the opposite way completely. They have released images of the console itself, with next to no further information. The device certainly looks the part, that’s for sure! The only details we know to date are that it is called the Ataribox and it comes in black and red or black and wood.

A Worthy Competitor?

The fact that we have no details of the inner workings of the device, means that it is impossible to know whether Atari is looking to compete with the big league consoles or not. However, going by the looks of the console, it certainly looks intriguing and could suggest we may be in for a treat. The images show an SD card slot, 4x USB ports and an Ethernet port. Of course, this would imply that the console is keeping on trend with modern specs, but also compatibilities for original classic content. Whichever it is, the Ataribox certainly has us excited. Consequently, this has the gaming community on their toes, not to mention the interest of the competition. Could we see a big upset coming?

Release Date

Much like the specifications, very little is known about the release date. However, it seems unlikely we will see the launch of the console this year. Of course, regardless of the unknown details. This is the most exciting product from Atari in many years.

The Ataribox shares the same wooden front panel as the 2600

Android or Atari’s Own?

Based on the connectivity of the console, it is likely we may see an Android based system. Alternatively, we could be very wrong and we may see Atari’s own take on an operating system. Android gaming systems notoriously do very poorly, this could cause detrimental for the Atari name. Admittedly, ourselves and the whole community are hoping for a new revolution. In any case, compared to the 8-bit MOS 6507 1.19MHz, 4Kb ROM and 128 Bytes RAM of the original 2600, we are certain to get an improvement. Are you excited or concerned about Atari’s introduction back into the gaming community?
