Ever since its release last year, the Quest 2 VR from Meta (or Facebook if you still prefer) has proven to be a massive hit with consumers. Offering a solid gateway into virtual reality, it’s hard to deny that one of the biggest reasons for its success has been because of its very attractive price point. Particularly the $299.99 for the 128GB version.
It seems, however, that following a report via TechPowerUp, big changes are coming to the Quest 2. No, the price isn’t going down. Quite the contrary. Meta has confirmed a massive price increase which suddenly doesn’t make the (formerly?) popular VR headset quite so financially appealing!
In making the announcement, Meta has said that the price increase is due to a significant rise in the cost of components. As such, as of August 1st (that’s just a few days away if you’re not paying attention), the cost of the 128GB Quest 2 VR headset will increase by… wait for it… $100! No, not a typo, that’s 100 US dollars. With this in mind, therefore, this will take its total adjusted retail price to $399.99.
What do we think about this? Well, how does bullshit sound? – Yes, coarse language, but let’s get real here. While components have undoubtedly gone through some difficult times over the last 2 years, there’s no way that this can be to the total tune of $100 extra being required on top of its original price! Well, not unless the price wasn’t too solid to begin with!
The real reason for this increase from Meta simply has to be down to one of two options; Either Meta deliberately sold them at a loss to create a huge market impact (which isn’t uncommon – neither the PS5 and Xbox Series X are sold at profit) and they’re now trying to cover costs. Or, alternatively, they’ve trying to cover the expense of their recent ‘Metaverse’ project which has, so far, totally failed to light a match, let alone set the world on fire!
Let’s be honest though, whatever the reason, for $399.99, interest in the Quest 2 VR is going to fall off a cliff. Let’s just hope that, if you were planning on buying one, prices remain the same until August 1st because, if they do, you’ll want to be pouncing on any models you see available (at the original price) right now!
