Micron introduces smallest 128Gb NAND Flash chip

Micron introduces the smallest 128Gb NAND flash memory, with a die area of 146 square mm and 20nm fabrication process viz. based on triple-level cell flash technology. Micron claims that this is roughly 25% smaller compared to similar capacity 20nm multi-cell NAND chips and measures 12mm x 12mm.

TLC has 3 similar transistors, where MLC has two whereas SLC has one. But Micron plan to use these TLC NAND for cost-competitive removable storage drives such as flash drives.

TLC have been in SSD before, such as the Samsung 840, the cheaper version of the Pro variant. It remains to be seen if others will implement it and if it can provide much better performance compared to MLC-based counterparts, considering that performance of the SSD depends on the controller and the firmware as well.
