Micron and Partners Announces GDDR6 Solutions

Last year, JEDEC finalized the specifications for GDDR6. Since then, various memory producers have started to announce their plans for GDDR6. Both Samsung and Sky Hynix have already set out their plans for the new memory standard and in some cases released them. Following up shortly, Micron is also announcing their comprehensive solution to GDDR6 with a number of industry partners.

Micron is working with Rambus, Northwest Logic and Avery Design to provide a comprehensive GDDR6 solution. Together, the firms will offer GDDR6, GDDR6 PHY, GDDR6 controllers and verification IP. This helps cover more ground for GDDR6 outside of the traditional graphics usage. Together, the goal is to offer GDDR6 for applications outside of the traditional GPU customers in AMD and Nvidia.

Micron Looks to Expand GDDR6 Beyond Graphics

While primarily a GPU centric technology, GDDR6 really is a just fast memory standard. The goal is to expand usage to power AI, ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems), and high-speed networking. All of these newer applications require fast memory, a demand GDDR6 can meet. With all the building blocks, customers can now integrate a readily built memory subsystem instead of doing all the work themselves.

With the rise of HBM2, it is important for GDDR6 to find new ways to grow. This is especially true of Micron which is not really involved in the HBM market. Due to the rise of other computation heavy workloads, there is a lot of opportunities, especially for self-driving cars. It will be interesting to see where GDDR6 will end up over the next couple of years. Of course, it will also find its way into consoles and GPUs that are coming up.
