Micron Technology, Inc. introduced and announced the availability of their single-sided SODIMM and a low profile, single-sided DDR3 SODIMM slot solution specifically for ultrabook, convertibles, tablet and other devices that are usually made to be thinner and lighter.
These single-sided SODIMM modules are available in a 4GB, x8 configuration. The models are made using 30nm DDR3L-RS components which are said to help in lower power consumption in standby mode. Also to note, these memory kits are pin-to-pin compatible with the existing devices with SO-DIMM slots.
The new connector however results in 35% reduction in height in comparison with other low-profile connectors, therefore reduces the space occupied on the motherboard by nearly 156mm².
Single sided connector samples are available from now, with the mass production scheduled for June 2013. The samples of single-sided SODIMM are also available, but the mass production is scheduled for spring 2013.
