Microsoft Announces Price Drop on Xbox One!

Microsoft has announced that the Xbox One is going to receive a significant price drop. The announcement comes ahead of what it going to be a busy Summer period for Microsoft and will be welcome news for gamers.

Price drop? Tell me more!

Yes, Microsoft has confirmed via its Twitter feed that the Xbox One is set to receive a discount of up to $50.00. It is unclear as to the form in which this discount will take place. Before this, Xbox One base units were priced around £250.00. Unconfirmed reports suggest that the discount may only be applied to certain bundles. A quick cursory glance of websites would suggest that the discount has been passed onto consumers. Prices by retailers average the Xbox One 500gb at circa £200-£225.

Any reason for this price drop?

Two, as far as I can see.

1 – Xbox game pass launched earlier this month. Microsoft may be quite keen to boost the sales of its consoles based on this new game subscription service. Offering the console less expensively may allow a recoup via the subscription charge.

2 – Microsoft wishes to shift what is possibly an over-abundance of stock in preparation for Project Scorpio.

Yes, I am a colossal cynic. Chances are that Microsoft is just doing this to boost sales.

Is project Scorpio the reason behind this?

Yes. Consider this. All hypothetically speaking of course. Microsoft has 2,000,000 units in their warehouse. Retailers supplies are good. Sales are steady, but there is no particular demand at the moment. Microsoft is getting ready to roll out its new Xbox One, one with a lot more power, punch and precision – Project Scorpio. Once Scorpio is out, who realistically is going to want a Xbox One anymore?

If you were Microsoft, you’d be quite keen to shift that stock, as quickly as possible, before Project Scorpio becomes the new baby. The Xbox One is not doomed. At least, not yet.  In fact, such a price drop will likely be a win-win. It may, however, indicate the beginning of the end of the Xbox One. What would you do? Buy an Xbox One or wait for Scorpio?
