Microsoft Announces Video Super Resolution for Edge

Recently we have seen NVIDIA release Video Super Resolution for their graphics cards to be used in Chromium and Edge as well as a rumour surrounding Intel’s equivalent of this tool, now Microsoft is joining in with video super-resolution and inviting AMD to the party as well.

Video Super Resolution Coming to Edge

Microsoft has announced that they are introducing an experimental version of Video Super Resolution to Microsoft Edge which works on all RTX model graphics cards as well as Radeon RX 5700 – RX 7800. I’m not sure whether that is a typo or this super-resolution doesn’t work on the 7900xt but works fine on the yet unreleased RX 7800xt.

VSR technology uses machine learning to remove blocky artefacts, improve text readability and increase the general video resolution and is currently available to 50% of edge users though it has got certain conditions for it to work.

Conditions For Edge VSR

To use this technology the first thing to note is obviously you have to be using one of the aforementioned graphics cards and the video resolution must be no more than 720p. The video content you are watching must also not be protected by DRM so it’s unlikely to work with streaming services such as Netflix or Amazon Prime Video but will be fine for YouTube. These conditions are required due to the amount of power that is required to upscale videos in this way which means that it is only offered when connected to AC power and cannot be run off the battery of a laptop.

Whilst this is only available for 50% of users you are available to manually force the feature by adding a flag to the browser: edge://flags/#edge-video-super-resolution and then you can activate VSR by clicking the HD icon that appears in the address bar allowing you to enable and disable VSR.

More Information

VSR is a cool technology, I still have yet to try it out myself though. If you are interested in Edge VSR you can read about it on the Microsoft Edge blog page here.

What are your thoughts on VSR Technology, Have you given it a try yet? Let us know in the comments.
