After weeks of speculation, and I daresay many PC owners fiddling around in their BIOS attempting to find and correctly set their TMP 2.0 and Secure Boot settings, Microsoft has officially confirmed that the Windows 11 operating system will start its rollout on October 5th. And yes, it will be made available as ‘free’ for existing (and activated) Windows 10 users!
So, in around 6 weeks’ time, we’re going to start to be given the opportunity to upgrade to Windows 11. Is it worth it though? Well, based on what Microsoft is saying, they certainly seem to think so!
In announcing the official rollout release date of Windows 11, Microsoft has confirmed 11 key features (not an overly surprising number) that the new operating system will provide:
While Windows 11 will start rolling out on October 5th, we should note that to reduce overall server demand, it’s exceptionally unlikely that you’ll immediately be prompted to make the upgrade the moment you switch your PC (or laptop) on. In attempting to explain this staggered approach, Microsoft has said:
“The free upgrade to Windows 11 starts on October 5 and will be phased and measured with a focus on quality. Following the tremendous learnings from Windows 10, we want to make sure we’re providing you with the best possible experience. That means new eligible devices will be offered the upgrade first. The upgrade will then roll out over time to in-market devices based on intelligence models that consider hardware eligibility, reliability metrics, age of the device, and other factors that impact the upgrade experience. We expect all eligible devices to be offered the free upgrade to Windows 11 by mid-2022. If you have a Windows 10 PC that’s eligible for the upgrade, Windows Update will let you know when it’s available. You can also check to see if Windows 11 is ready for your device by going to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.”
