Not everyone loves their Brussel sprouts at Christmas, but don’t dismiss them so quickly because a team have managed to find yet another use for the little green veggies. As part of the Big Bang UK Scientists & Engineer Fair a Christmas tree now gets its lights powered by a huge Brussels sprout battery.
Using five power cells that each feature 200 Brussel sprouts, the full 1000 Brussel sprouts provide enough power to keep the lights going for a few weeks! It works by mounting them on zinc and copper electrodes which causes a chemical reaction, this generates a small current of electricity, and the power for all 1000 of them is collected in a capacitor that can then power the lights.

I like Brussel sprouts but I’d never thought they’d power anything other than peoples voices about the stink you leave in the toilet if you forget to spray. Are they cooked of raw? 🙂
