A pitched concept for a Windows handheld gaming mode for devices like the Steam Deck has been shared on Twitter.
Microsoft regularly hosts hackathon events which allow employees to present ideas or projects for the Windows operating system. One of these projects, concerning a handheld gaming mode, has been shared on Twitter by user @_h0x0d_. The project shared entails a mode for Windows that provides a much more fluid experience when using the OS on handheld devices such as the Steam Deck. The unknown narrator speaks about the current problems with Windows on the Steam Deck which the overall user experience is clunky and rough.
This project has created a full handheld gaming mode for Windows and offers a more robust experience improving navigation, compatibility and the overall user experience. The images shared show a launcher to quickly launch games and button mapping to correctly navigate these menus as well as navigate Windows as a whole. The people behind this have done a great job at presenting what they want to see with Windows to make handheld gaming viable and comfortable.
This at the moment is just a proposal that was reportedly made back in September which means it isn’t likely to be seen any time soon or any time at all as we haven’t heard anything about it from Microsoft themselves. This is a very good proposal and would be beneficial for the handheld market, especially with more handheld products, such as the ROG Ally, being released soon.
