Rumours suggest that Microsoft is considering investing in Cyanogen, creator of the CyanogenMod ROM, the Android-based firmware that offers an “enhanced open source firmware distribution” of Android, but without Google branding.

The Wall Street Journal, through “people familiar with the matter”, is reporting that Microsoft is weighing up investing $70 million during Cyanogen’s latest financing round.

Kirt McMaster, CEO of Cyanogen last week made the bold assertion that “We’re going to take Android away from Google.”
