Microsoft has recently announced its next-generation Surface available for pre-order.
Presented almost a year ago at CES 2011, for those unfamiliar with the Surface products, it’s a touch-based table computer, in other words a touch-screen fitted with the computer hardware placed on four feet to act as an interactive table, simple enough, isn’t it?
This year’s Surface is called the Samsung SUR40, and features innovative technologies such as PixelSense, a technology that gives LCD panel the ability to see without the use of any camera. Thanks to 2 million sensors built into the panel to pick up visible or infrared light, the SUR40 recognizes 50 points of simultaneous touch, that includes fingers, hands as well as other objects placed on the screen.
Specifications wise, compared to previous products, the SUR40 includes a more powerful processor and new system software. Unlike the first-gen model that needed projector cameras, this next-gen Surface can be used both horizontally and vertically.
“This pre-order phase brings us one step closer to getting the highly anticipated Samsung SUR40 for Microsoft Surface into the hands of our customers,” said Charles Park, vice president at Samsung Electronics. “The Samsung SUR40 delivers a unique interactive experience that will significantly change the way companies engage with their customers.”
Software developers are given the opportunity to create solutions for the Samsung SUR40 freely with access to a wide palette of tools all of which enable developers to write applications on any Windows 7 machine. To get started head here.
Available now for pre-order at the price of $8,400 (unlike its predecessor priced at $12,500 in 2008), it is currently proposed in 23 countries worldwide and can be pre-ordered from the Samsung Electronic website here. The coming months should see additional countries added to the list.
