Not so long ago, Sony unveiled the PS4 Pro and discussed the console’s 4K capabilities. Of course, the hardware isn’t powerful enough to cope with native 4K gaming and employs upscaling or checkerboard rendering. This technology is quite impressive and still provides a great boost in visual fidelity compared to the standard PlayStation 4. Of course, native 4K would be ideal but it’s not possible without spending a large sum of money. Some critics have suggested Sony’s marketing of the PS4 as a 4K device is misleading and the overall message has been very confusing.
It’s an interesting move because Microsoft’s latest creation, the Xbox Scorpio has significantly better hardware and offers up to 6 Teraflops of processing power. The console will launch in holiday 2017 and it seems Microsoft is finally stepping up the marketing. As you can see, Microsoft claims the Xbox Scorpio is the “first and only console to enable true 4K gaming and hi-fidelity VR”:
This bold claim could certainly be true and the Xbox Scorpio should have enough horsepower to render games at a native 4K resolution. Whether the console manages to uphold 60 frames-per-second remains to be seen and I’m expecting 4K to be prioritised over a smoother frame-rate. Whatever the case, I’m looking forward to the Xbox Scorpio and think it’s got quite a lot to offer.
