It has been a long time coming, but finally Microsoft is getting round to designing the next generation of Xbox consoles. But unlike previously it will not be a case of one-size-fits-all as with previous Xbox’s where the only variation you could get was in internal storage not in performance. The reason why this launch is so important is it plans to do something that console gamers have never really experience before, and that is raise the graphical performance level of the Xbox to levels similar to that of a high end gaming PC. Microsoft will introduce to separate designs for the Xbox 360 successor, the first one is will be an entry-level console designed more like a set-top box, designed around the Kinect controller and maybe designed to compete against the Nintendo Wii U.
The second Xbox design is very interesting indeed. With impressive specifications unlike anything we have seen from a console before, packing a 6 core processor which is likely to be AMD for economical reasons although it is still unspecified with AMD 28nm Radeon graphics although Microsoft has stated it will wait until TSMC perfects the 28nm process before it buys into it. In addition to this it will also pack 2GB of DDR3 memory. The console will probably be shown off at CES next year in January although the launch date is likely to come much later than that as the refinement process takes a while. There is also a lot of speculation this console will be named the Xbox 720 to follow a logical naming pattern, although this is not confirmed as yet.
