The question of whether psychics exist is one of a matter of personal belief. Personally, I do not believe they are real. When it comes to mind reading, however, that might actually be closer than we think.
Both science and medical experts are collaborating to design computer software which they report will be capable of reading your mind. Get your tin foil hats at the ready!
In a report via SkyNews, the technology in development could allow computers to successfully monitor brain activity and by proxy help, people make better decisions.
So rather than being a mind reading device with malicious intentions, it’s designed more to help people analyse information and make better choices.
You might, at this point, be wondering what applications this technology could have if not to take over the world. Well, such examples given include scanning x-rays for cancer detection, assisting city traders in making better investment choices and even assisting the police in finding and locating criminals. In addition to this, however, it is also thought that it could assist people with mobility issues by using their mind to control electrical objects or prosthetics.
One other application discussed is the potential inclusion in improving driving standards with the technology able to detect when you ‘zone out’ or begin to lose concentration.
Indications suggest that the technology could be available as early as within the next 5 years. There will, of course, be a number who are concerned about what applications this will have on civil liberties. At present, however, it seems that mind reading technology is closer than we think.
What do you think? Could this represent a major breakthrough? Is it too easily open to misuse? Is the timeline realistic? – Let us know in the comments (sorry, we can’t read your minds, yet…).
