MIT Create Incredible Super-Kinect Like Camera For Just $500

A team at MIT have really out done themselves, again! While they’ve already gained legendary status for their femto-camera, a photographic device that was capable of taking 1 trillion exposures a second, fast enough to take pictures of light moving!

The time around, they’ve taken the core technology that powered the Microsoft Xbox One Kinect and given it series performance boost. The new camera uses “Time Flight Technology” that calculates an objects whereabouts by measuring the time it takes for light to reflect back to the sensor from the object.

Using some fancy calculation the sensor can detect and capture 3D objects and differentiate them much easier. The device is so accurate that it can work in snow, pouring rain, or at night time. The technology could be the solution required for self driving cars as it could differentiate between objects in such varied conditions much better than any current technology, at a significantly reduced cost.

So great is their achievement that the process is normally reserved to a $500,000 femto-camera, and at just $500 it is safe to say they’ve cut the cost of the technology.

The future of this technology is very promising and we wait to see what innovations it leads to.
