Modder Fixes Tales of Symphonia in 14 Minutes

There’s been a lot of debate around the web recently, as the release of Tales of Symphonia seemed to betray many of those statistics that many of us PC gamers hold dear. The game launched with a locked resolution, virtually no graphics settings to configure, and to make matters even worse, even the games frame rate was locked! Naturally, the PC gaming community wasn’t exactly happy about this development, as it immediately reeked of a lazy PC port, something that’s not exactly uncommon these days.

The idea of launching a game on PC these days with a locked resolution of 720 and a frame rate that is locked to 30 frames per second is just absolutely bonkers. However, that’s not going to stop one super fast PC modder, known as ‘Durante’, from taking just 14 minutes to fix the games shortcomings. Now, either this guy is a freaking wizard or it just goes to show how lazy some developers are getting.

“I never expected that, but Tales of Symphonia was released resolution-locked. I’ve released a preliminary GeDoSaTo plugin for the game to fix that.” said Durante.

Modder ‘Durante’ fixed the resolution is so quickly and much of it comes down to a simple mod to the ini files. He released the following notes for the game:

Things to keep in mind:

  • The game name, for purposes of config files, screenshot paths, etc, is “Symphonia”. This is a bit of a hack due to the silly DRM they use.
  • As always with games with locked rendering resolution, you need to set your desired one from the .ini file ( config\Symphonia\GeDoSaTo.ini ). It looks like this by default:
  • There is a bit of an ugly interaction with some low-res processing going on. I might fix that if I can find the motivation.
  • Keep the in-game resolution setting at 720p, that’s the only thing I tested.

You can get the latest version including this plugin by updating from within GeDoSaTo or with the installer provided here. As always, you can donate to support continuing GeDoSaTo development here.

That’s great work for such a short development time and I’m sure a lot of PC gamers are going to love being able to get a little more out of this game now. To close up, Durante also released the following update.

“When I say “preliminary” I mean with a total development and testing time of less than 3 hours. So if you run into issues, keep that in mind. (Of course, if you get crashes, or the game failing to launch, or anything like that, it might just as well be the game or its DRM system rather than GeDoSaTo)”
