AMD Ryzen 5 1400 Overclocked to 3.8 GHz and Benchmarked

In just over a week, AMD will release their second batch of Ryzen processors. The Ryzen 5 are based on hexacore and quadcore Zen CPUs with between 12 and 6 threads. Earlier in the week, we got the first leaked benchmark which faced off the Ryzen 5 1400 with some Intel CPUs. Today, we have a series of overclocked benchmarks for the Ryzen 5 1400 coming out.

As the cheapest Ryzen 5 to come out on April 11th, the chip costs a mere $169. For this low price, AMD is offering 4 cores and 8 threads clocked at 3.2 GHz base and 3.4 GHz boost with 8MB of L3 cache. While it is priced against the low-end i5 and top end i3 CPUs from Intel, it’s configuration will undoubtedly draw comparisons with the $300+ i7 series.

From the benchmarks, it appears that this particular sample and configuration was only able to hit 3.8 GHz. Based on the Ryzen 7 results, this is likely the middle of the overclocking spectrum. At this speed, the chip scored 801 points in CB R15 and 9.06 points in CB R11.5. This is somewhat lower than what Intel manages with their i7 4770K which is clocked at a comparable speed.

Moving on, we have the various 3DMark tests run at 3.7 GHz. 3DMark TimeSpy came in at 3792 points for the CPU, Fire Strike Ultra a physics score of 11963 and a Fire Strike Extreme physics score of 11988. For memory operations with 2666 MHz DDR4, the chip managed 40439 MB/s (Read), 40214 MB/s (Write), 35760 MB/s (Copy) and latency of 88.4 ns.

Overall, it looks like AMD has a chip that strikes close to where Intel’s i7 chips perform but is a bit lacking in some specific areas. As we’ve seen before with the Ryzen 7, there is still a lot of optimation work that needs to be done for Ryzen. There is also the fact that there are inherent weaknesses of Zen and the CCX design. Nonetheless, at $169, AMD is offering the market an unprecedented deal for the Ryzen 5 1400.
