Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, the mobile game developed by NetherRealm Studios, will end its services nearly one year after its release. The game, launched in October 2023, will be removed from the App Store and Google Play on July 22, 2024, with in-game purchases disabled on August 23, 2024. The game will officially shut down on October 21, 2024.
Despite its short lifespan, Mortal Kombat: Onslaught received favorable ratings. On Google Play, it had a 4.5-star rating with over 60,000 votes, and on the App Store, it held a 4.7-star rating with over 17,000 reviews. The game centered around the fallen Elder God Shinnok, who aimed to reclaim his power by gathering relics from various realms. Players joined forces with Raiden to assemble a team of fighters to thwart Shinnok’s schemes.
The announcement of the game’s shutdown left fans disappointed. Many had hoped for continued support and new content. The shutdown follows recent layoffs at NetherRealm Studios, possibly indicating a cost-cutting measure.
NetherRealm Studios has yet to clarify how they will handle rewards tied to Mortal Kombat: Onslaught for players who linked their accounts. Fans hope for a workaround to avoid losing exclusive content.
