So, in the box with this mouse, you get a few extras that you wouldn’t normally see on most mice. You get a full kit to cover the top panel, as well as two ultra-wide side panels. They come with a magnetic mounting system too, so you can swap them out without the use of tools. Just pull one of them off, pop on the new one, and you’re good to go. The side panels are wider than the stock ones, while the two top panels have a different length and upper curve for tweaking the palm rest ergonomics.
There are two cables included too. The first is lightweight rubber sleeved and features a shorter cable. Of course, this one is great for on-desk systems and using on notebooks/laptops.
The primary cable is much higher quality, featuring a thick black braided sleeving, and a longer cable design. Of course, this one is better suited for standard under-the-desk tower systems.
Out of the box, the mouse looks pretty slick and has plenty in common with other high-end gaming mice. Down the left side, you’ll find two navigation buttons, which are fully programmable, as are all the buttons on this mouse.
The magnetic side panel is the small wing version, with a small thumb rest on the base. However, it features durable rubber side grips and great ergonomics for most play styles.
The right side of the mouse is pretty much identical to the left too. The mouse can be used by both left and right-handed players. However, you can easily use the extra side buttons as macro launches, DPI toggles, shortcuts, or anything else for that matter. Either way, it makes the GM60 far more versatile than most mice, and suitable for a greater number of gamers.
This is one mean looking mouse, it has a really sleek low profile design, but still looks pretty darn aggressive too. The textured grey finish looks fantastic like it’s carved out of some futuristic material; of course, we know it’s a present-day plastic.
From the front, it looks like some driverless supercar to me. The headlights at the front are functional too, with RGB lighting built-in, with more lighting tucking into the top and sides of the mouse. Of course, we’ll see that lighting in action shortly.
Around the back, a nice symmetrical design, which is obviously needed given the reversible nature of the ergonomics.
There are five slipmats of varying shapes and sizes under here, meaning the mouse has fantastic glide even on softer surfaces. I would say this mouse is a bit on the heavy side at 170g. However, I like a weighted mouse as they’re great for smoother fluid motions. Those wanting a featherweight twitchy mouse have many other options on the market for that purpose though. I love that the metal frame continues under the rear of the mouse. It gives it a lower centre of gravity, as well as excellent rigidity and strength.
As I said before, all the panels are mounted with small magnets. This mounting system makes it super easy to strip down the mouse and customise the panels. I doubt anyone would be doing this all the time, but at least when you do, it’s straightforward enough.
With everything removed, you can clearly see each RGB lighting zone. They’re pretty big and should provide loads of light once the mouse is powered up.
With the slim panels removed and the wider panels installed, the mouse looks more like a fighter jet than a mouse. The massive wings look silly to my eyes, but they’re plentifully practical too. They provide a great amount of space to rest your fingers and can improve comfort for those using a palm rest playstyle.
For MMO gaming, just lounging back and resting your hand over the mouse for the night to cruise through your quests, the GM60 is perfect. It’s massive and very comfortable to manage. Of course, when it comes to FPS gaming, you can sharpen it up, shed the weight, and get the slim panels up. In the slim mode, it’s a nimble beast that’s perfect for fingertip grip play styles in your favourite twitchy shooter or MOBA game.
If you thought the mouse looked a bit evil with the lights off, it’s even more menacing with the LED lights powered on. The colours are stunning, and of course, you can customise that in the software and apply all those usually shiny effects we’ve come to expect these days. Aside from the main LEDs, you’ll also find three indicator lights on top for your DPI level. Furthermore, while there are three DPI levels, you can customise each in the software.
With 100 DPI adjustments all the way past 10000 DPI, the sensor certainly has a big range to it. For me, anything over about 6000 DPI was crazy fast anyway, but it’s nice to have the extended range for some users I’m sure. The Avago sensor doesn’t disappoint either, and it’s one of the nicer optical sensors on the market today. It’ll certainly track as well as any other high-end gaming mouse out there as far as I’m concerned. It’s got a nice low lift-off by default, and certainly, no issues with jitter either; perfect for high speed and accuracy.
The ergonomics are really something, and with those magnetic panels, you can easily take your time to find what works for you. Everyone is different, we all have unique hands, and our own grip type too. I actually like a bigger mouse, so double wings work really well for me, and I am ambidextrous so that’s another bonus here.
Being able to reprogram the mouse is a huge win, and while some may have forward/ backwards navigation buttons on both sides, you can do so much more. For me, I set the copy and paste functions on the right side; it’s a real productivity boost! However, gamers can set their macros, making it a bit more versatile in MOBA and MMO type games too.
How you choose to configure the mouse it up to you. You may leave it stock, and it’ll be brilliant. However, spend a day with each configuration, and you may be surprised to how much difference it can make.
