MSI’s gaming laptops have gained a special status for their gorgeous sense of style and astounding features. It’s no surprise that the latest data puts their firmly in the lead as the world’s most successful gaming laptop manufacturer. Honestly, it’s thoroughly deserved and I’m pleased to see the MSI pushing the technical envelope further and making laptops a true alternative to traditional desktops. Of course, the advent of NVIDIA’s highly-efficient Pascal architecture played a huge part in this progress and dramatically cut the performance deficit between the two form-factors. Compiling any kind of system requires a balanced, thoughtful approach and ensuring the weakest link doesn’t inhibit the user-experience. While the previous generation Intel processors in the form of the i7-6700HQ and i7-6820HK complemented high-end graphics hardware pretty well, there’s always room for improvement.
Recently, Intel released the higher-end Kaby Lake offerings which feature prominently in MSI’s constantly evolving laptop series. The new MSI GT62VR 7RE Dominator Pro utilises the Intel Core i7-7820HK with a Turbo boost up to 3.9GHz. To put this into perspective, the i7-6820HK could reach 3.60GHz prior to overclocking. The default 300MHz enhancement should offer a good boost when working with CPU-intensive applications. The laptop also employs a 3840×2160 IPS-level screen, 32GB Kingston 24000MHz DDR4 dual-channel memory and the GTX 1070. Not only that, there’s a 500GB Samsung M.2 boot SSD, 1TB 2.5-inch secondary drive an 8-cell battery. As per usual for a Dominator branded laptop, the Steelseries keyboard is a joy to use and supports vibrant RGB illumination. Rather impressively, MSI honed the audio hardware to deliver a higher sampling rate in their latest range. As you can see, the laptop has a brilliant specification and I’m expecting it to provide a stellar gaming experience.
