Rise of the Tomb Raider causes absolute havoc on AMD graphics cards and this is reflected in their poor minimum frame rates. Please note, we don’t currently use the DirectX 12 render because it’s been fairly unreliable thus far for benchmarking purposes. As expected, the MSI GTX 1060 Gaming X does remarkably well and obtains a much higher minimum frame-rate than the GTX 980. During demanding sections, the frame-rate is more consistent but the average remains similar because the maximum figure isn’t as high.
Once the resolution is increased to 2560×1440, the graphics card falls behind the GTX 980. On the other hand, the minimum figure is higher and contributes towards a less jarring user experience.
In 4K testing, the MSI GTX 1060 Gaming X upholds a pretty solid frame-rate and maintains a good advantage over its nearest rivals. Of course, it’s still some way off the GTX 1070 which offers performance in a difference league.
