At this price range, the MSI GH70 gaming headset is far from cheap. However, MSI is playing a big game in terms of features, build quality and design. I honestly think it can easily compete with headsets that are much more expensive, making it pretty decent value for money.
You can find the MSI GH70 on Amazon for around $115 in the US or £115 in the UK.
A lot of the strength of this headset in terms of its audio support, come through the use of a USB connector. Now, this is fantastic for desktop PC users, mostly, but I would like to see a version with a 3.5-millimetre jack. Of course, the use of USB allows the control of the RGB lighting for the desktop software, the built-in hardware that deals with the virtual 7.1 surround, and any other settings that can be attributed to the headset itself. Perhaps MSI could offer a split Jack option with both 3.5 and USB connectors in a future model. Maybe this is just a personal preference of mine; it obviously won’t apply to everybody.
I really am clutching at straws here writing about what kind of connector it uses, because the headset is pretty much flawless otherwise. If all I can complain about is a subjective issue, then MSI is on to a winner.
The overall build quality of the headset is up there with the best. The choice of materials has clearly had some thought put into them. The design really pops. There are some plastics on the headset, but they’ve all been very nicely finished. All surfaces have a premium quality look and feel. The auto-adjusting headband, the retractable boom microphone, even the quality of the LED lights that have been installed, are all to a very high standard.
When it comes down to it, I have little care of how my headset looks. So long as it sounds the best it can be, and MSI certainly delivered that to the GH70. Will many consumers be taken by the high-resolution audio support? That is anyone’s guess. For me, I’m a bit of a sucker for anything like that. However, so long as the headset sounds great who cares what it does or doesn’t have certification for. The drivers are meaty when you want them to be; certainly, enough to give some bones a shake. However, it’s just as capable of being beautifully detailed and warming. When you want to sit back at lower volumes and chill with your favourite albums or movies, you can. It doesn’t matter what kind of media you throw at them they sound great, as any great set of headphones or headset should.
The headset features some truly stunning RGB lighting effects. Of course, it also has excellent sound processing. Both in regards to high-resolution audio support and the virtual surround. The latest from MSI may just be the next headset you have to buy.
