Many across the internet have commented on MSI’s new “GPU Reactor Module” as being a marketing gimmick but today is an event that is likely to prove many of them wrong. The GPU reactor module is designed to provide extra power to the GPU memory and core which allows for greater overclocks. In the case of this particular MSI Lightning HD 7970 card, an enthusiast was able to take the card to 1800MHz on the core (up from 925MHz stock) and 7.7GHz on the memory (up from 5.5GHz stock). This was all made possible thanks to the GPU reactor being able to support a core voltage of 1.7v with LN2 cooling. The final memory bandwidth supported was a staggering 370GB/s.
How does this translate into results? Well the card posted a 3D Mark 11 score of P15035 with an Intel Core i7-3960X Extreme Edition six-core chip clocked at 5207 MHz, 4 GB (4x 1 GB) DDR3 memory clocked at 2314 MHz and an MSI Big Bang XPower II motherboard. This just goes to show just how overclockable the HD 7970 really is, not to mention the effectiveness of MSI’s GPU Reactor. The overclocking was done by Swedish overclocker Elmor.
