MSI Modern MD271CPW Monitor Review

How Much Does it Cost?

The MSI Modern MD271P 27 Inch Full HD 75Hz IPS Monitor is available now from Amazon for just £217.99. I’ll admit, that’s a bit of a premium price for a Full HD monitor, but with the slick ergonomics of the stand, the clear aesthetics, and the USB C input, it seems you get a little extra for your investment, however, I would like to see that price just below £200. There’s a 2560×1440 version too, but unfortunately, it was out of stock and had to price at the time of writing.

Overview

MSI isn’t going to change the world with this monitor, it’s actually a pretty modest product compared to what I usually review. If I stack it up against other MSI monitors I’ve tested, such as the MSI Oculux NXG253R eSports Gaming Monitor, MSI MPG ARTYMIS 343CQR Ultra-Wide or the MSI Optix MAG272CQR Gaming, then it’ll look a little drab in comparison. However, that’s a bit of an unfair fight. The MSI Modern MD271P has strengths of its own, and for those who spend more time working than gaming, it’s a pretty sensible solution.

Performance

The IPS panel delivered solid colours throughout my testing, and it doesn’t matter if you’re in Photoshop, Google Docs, or just playing Peggle, the benefit of more good colours elevates everything. Of course, the IPS panel also means excellent viewing angles, and with a peak brightness of 250-cdn, and the versatile stand, it’s just a very easy monitor to live with day to day. The 75 Hz refresh rate is a nice bonus too, it just makes things feel a little smoother when scrolling, or daydreaming as you swirl your mouse pointer around the screen.

Build Quality

What does elevate this monitor over the competition are the build quality and design. It’s around £50 more expensive than its rivals, but I think the design really is next level compared to the black/grey boxes you would expect at this price range. The matte white finish looks amazing, and the stand has a really sturdy weight to it that makes the monitor feel planted when making ergonomic adjustments.

Should I Buy One?

You can get a monitor with this level of performance from its panel and save yourself around £50. However, if you’re willing to spend a little extra for the MSI Modern MD271PW you get class-leading build quality and design, some surprisingly decent built-in speakers, good ergonomics and rather unique in this price range, a Type-C display input.
