MSI Modern MD272QP Ultramarine Monitor Review

Performance

This isn’t a gaming monitor, but with a 1440p resolution and 75 Hz refresh rate, if you did want to fire up a game after a hard day’s work, or in the middle of a quiet day’s work, it’s certainly going to play nicely. eSports monitor it isn’t, but for a bit of Rocket League, Elder Scrolls or whatever, it’ll be absolutely fine, but alas, this isn’t a gaming monitor so I don’t feel the need to really pull at that thread any further. It does look stunning though, almost makes me want a blue keyboard and mouse to match.

With a 27″ panel, and a 2560 x 1440 resolution, the overall pixel density is really good. This means that showing two windows side by side feels very natural and everything was really clear and easy to read.

The overall colours look great, with dark blacks and balanced whites that don’t look washed out or glossy, which is a lousy way to say the contrast is really good.

For productivity, it’s really on point, I can talk crap on Discord on one side, and read crap others have said on the other. Sure, this is a work monitor, but really this is how I spend much of my day.

I do prefer a larger 32″ panel myself. However, 27″ is a very comfortable mid-range size for a monitor. It’s a good amount of screen space and helps balance the cost too. The monitor is colour accurate enough to do some video and image editing too, so it’s well suited to more advanced tasks, not just browsing reddit and excel.

Speaking of which, I find this monitor very easy on the eye. The default settings use the Eco mode, which softens the backlight and it looks good, without causing strain during long uses. However, I strongly suggest setting the monitor to User Mode, setting the white level to Warm and adjusting the backlight to your taste, as it nets even better all-round results, as you’ll see on the next page.

Furthermore, for people like me who edit long documents or pages, having a monitor that’s both easy on the eye, and supports a portrait mode makes it extremely versatile.

The colour accuracy is nice for media consumption too, with movies looking great throughout my testing. There are some 5W speakers built in which are nice and clear, they don’t distort, and while lacking in volume, they’re perfectly usable for a bit of casual consumption.

As a child still in my 30's (but not for long), I spend my day combining my love of music and movies with a life-long passion for gaming, from arcade classics and retro consoles to the latest high-end PC and console games. So it's no wonder I write about tech and test the latest hardware while I enjoy my hobbies!
