At the infamous Computex 2012 event this year we caught our first glimpse of the MSI Z77 MPower motherboard design. Not much has changed with the design since Computex 2012, in fact we can spot only one change – a reduction in the size of the heat sink labelled with “Military Class III” to make room for an additional 4 pin PWM fan header.
The MPower Z77 has been designed from the ground up to support the needs of overclockers. MSI used its MOA competitions to get feedback on these motherboards from gamers, enthusiasts and overclockers. MSI claim the board has the stability to support very heavy overclocks, on a 24/7 basis without failure.
The power regulation is one of the key selling points of this board, with Military Class III grade components and a 16 phase VRM this is more than most people could hope for when it comes to Z77 and Ivy/Sandy Bridge.
Connectivity includes all the standards you would expect from Z77 – SATA III, USB 3.0, PCI Express Gen 3 and so forth. The uniquely added connectivity from MSI includes the addition of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
MSI have gone all out on the nifty overclocking features, such as an easily accessible clear CMOS button in the top left of the board, and a selectable BIOS feature in the bottom right corner. Debug LEDs, a power button and reset button top off the useful overclocking feature set.
Based on what MSI have told us, they expect this to be the best Z77 board they have ever made for overclocking capabilities – so if you want to push your CPU to the maximum, then this is the motherboard to do it with if MSI is your preferred motherboard brand.
MSI are chucking a solid warranty behind this protect, boasting that overclocking is covered and should your MPower Z77 motherboard break under overclocking – or during any other form of reasonable use – then MSI will repair it free of charge.
Although the MPower Z77 is targeted at overclockers in general, MSI particular had watercooling enthusiasts in mind. Making sure the motherboard components can deal with a high temperature environment with low or no airflow for long periods of time.
Finally to top things off the MSI MPower Z77 has been colour coordinated to match the MSI Lightning series, so if you’ve bought, or are thinking about buying, the MSI HD 7970 Lightning Edition graphics card then it would be criminal not to pair it up with this.
We don’t know any numbers and dates just yet, but the MPower Z77 is “about to launch” and claims to be “at a more attractive price point” than the MSI Big Bang series of motherboards.
